TASR
Kosice, November 1, (TASR). Pavol Knurovsky, a retiree from Kosice works for several years now on Internet database of the Kosice Public Cemetery which with its 35 hectares and approximately 40000 gravesites is the largest cemetery in Slovakia.
His hobby is not self serving but it helps all survivors at home and abroad who are searching for the last resting place of their loved once. Not a long time ago, as Knurovsky told TASR today, his information published on City of Kosice's WEB page helped the Jewish religious congregation of Kosice to receive from various parts of the world 1.5 million Crowns to repair damaged grave stones. More than 130 grave stones were damaged on the Jewish cemetery in April of this year by young vandals. After many requests of the former Kosice-ans who have their ancestor buried there, Knurovsky decided to photographically document all destroyed grave sides. He eventually photographed all the damaged graves according to a list supplied by Pavol Sitar, the Presiding Officer of ZNO. This database he then added to the existing website of the Jewish cemetery which he created several years ago after he created the first WEB page of the Military Cemetery dedicated to fallen soldiers in the WWI.
Knurovsky is also preparing a similar "virtual cemetery" on Internet which he named "Who Was Who". This one will be dealing only with famous personalities buried in cemeteries in Kosice. He decided on this project after realizing that many gravesites are deteriorating or are destroyed because there is nobody to pay for upkeep for the coming years.
Knurovsky also created Internet WEB page "Memorial of the Soldiers of the Red Army" killed during the liberation of East Slovakia. On the WEB he also listed names of the German soldiers buried in the Kosice Public Cemetery between 1944 - 1945. At the present time he is working on documentation of the cemetery in Kosice - Myslava.
